How can we help?

Getting Started

Do I need to create an account?
No. BugOut requires no account, no sign-in, and no internet connection. All your data lives on your device. iCloud backup is optional and uses your existing iCloud Drive.
What's included for free vs. Pro?
The free version includes three complete scenarios: House Fire, Earthquake, and EMP / Grid Failure — with full gear checklists, drills, and scoring. Pro is a one-time purchase that unlocks all 13 scenarios, the My Bags view, and PDF export of gear lists.
How do I run my first drill?
Tap the Quick Drill button on the dashboard and choose a scenario. The app will start a countdown — when the timer hits zero, grab your gear, then return to confirm what you picked up. Your score is calculated immediately.

Scenarios

What scenarios are included?
BugOut includes 13 scenarios total. Real emergencies: House Fire, Apartment Fire, Earthquake, Gas Leak, Flash Flood, Wildfire, Hurricane, and EMP / Grid Failure. Satirical (Pro): Zombie Apocalypse, Nuclear Strike, Active Threat, and two bonus scenarios. All have custom gear lists and drill flows.
What's the difference between "Real" and "Satirical" scenarios?
Real scenarios are based on documented emergency preparedness guidelines and are intended for genuine readiness. Satirical scenarios take the same drill mechanics and apply them to more outlandish situations — they're designed to be fun while still building real preparedness habits.

Gear Tracking

What's the difference between "owned" and "staged"?
Owned means you have the item somewhere. Staged means it's accessible and ready to grab during an emergency — packed in your bag or in a designated spot. Your Preparedness Score only counts staged items.
Can I add items that aren't on the default list?
Yes. In any gear category, tap the Add Item button to enter a custom item. Custom items are tracked alongside the defaults and count toward your preparedness bar.
How do I export my gear list as a PDF?
PDF export is a Pro feature. Once Pro is unlocked, go to any scenario's gear view and tap the Share button in the top right. Choose Export PDF to save or share your full checklist.

Drill Scoring

How is my Preparedness Score calculated?
Your score is a weighted composite of three factors: Reaction (30%) — how quickly you begin moving after the drill fires; Preparedness (50%) — what percentage of your staged gear you confirmed during the drill; and Planning (20%) — how complete your emergency profile is (contacts, routes, meeting points). The score updates after every drill.
Why did my score drop after a drill?
Each drill recalculates your score from the most recent results. If you reacted slowly, missed gear, or your profile is incomplete, the score adjusts accordingly. Use the breakdown on the results screen to see exactly which area needs work.

iCloud Backup

Where is my data stored?
By default, everything is stored locally on your device. If you enable iCloud backup, BugOut saves rolling snapshots to your personal iCloud Drive — not our servers. We never see your data.
How do I restore from an iCloud backup?
Go to Settings → Backup & Sync → Restore from iCloud. BugOut will show your most recent snapshots. Tap any snapshot to restore it. Your current data will be replaced, so make sure to back up first if needed.

Purchases & Restore

How do I restore my Pro purchase on a new device?
Go to Settings → Restore Purchases. BugOut will check your App Store receipt and re-unlock Pro automatically. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID you used to purchase.
Is Pro a subscription?
No. Pro is a one-time purchase. Pay once, own it on all your devices forever. No recurring charges.

Quiet Hours & Scheduling

How do quiet hours work?
Quiet hours define a time window when scheduled drills will never trigger. For example, set quiet hours from 10 PM to 7 AM and BugOut will hold any scheduled drills until after 7 AM. Configure this in Settings → Drill Scheduling → Quiet Hours.
What scheduling options are available?
Daily, every 3 days, weekly, or randomized (BugOut picks a random day within a week window). You can also disable scheduling and run drills manually with the Drill Now button.

Nearby Share

How does Nearby Share work?
Nearby Share uses Bluetooth and local Wi-Fi to send checklists directly to other devices running BugOut. No internet connection is required. Open the Share button on any gear list or profile view and tap Share Nearby. The other device needs to have BugOut open and be within range.
Can I share my full emergency profile with a family member?
Yes. From your Profile view, tap Share → Nearby Share. The recipient can accept the shared profile and import your contacts, routes, and meeting points into their own app.
